About Gosainkunda Lake Trek
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek is more than a trek, it is an unforgettable journey to the sacred alpine lakes. Situated north of Kathmandu in the Langtang region, the trek to these high-altitude lakes takes you into the heart of the high mountains within a few days of walking.
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek perfectly blends spirituality and adventure. The lakes, mainly the Gosainkunda Lake, hold high religious and cultural significance for the locals, who are devotees of Hindus, Buddhists, and Shamans. These lakes are also the origin of the Trisuli River.
Every year, around mid-August, on the full moon day of Bhadra month, devotees of Lord Shiva and Shamanism from all over Nepal make their way to the lakes to celebrate the Janai Purnima festival. During this period, people perform various rituals and prayers. Trekking during this period can be an insightful journey and a first-hand festival experience.
During the trek, you will encounter various holy lakes like the Gosainkunda, Saraswati Kunda, Suryakunda, Bhairavkunda, Ganeshkunda, and many more. There are more than 100 glacial lakes, big and small, spread around the area. Trekking through villages, lush pine, and rhododendron forests with splendid mountain vistas, you will reach the lake areas in a few days. Moreover, the trek is an opportunity to explore the daily life of the villagers, mainly of the Tamang and Hyolmo community.
The Gosainkunda Lake Trek provides impressive panoramic views of mountain ranges like the Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Rolwaling, Dorje Lakpa, and a few Tibetan peaks. Likewise, the area boasts diverse wildlife and is known for being home to the exotic Red Panda. And, if you are trekking during the springtime, the colorful Rhododendron forest is likely to enchant you with the beautiful blooming flowers and their fragrance filling the air as you walk by.
